Starting out mapping can feel scary, especially if one has little or no prior knowledge about the tools, concepts and workflows of creating a map. OpenStreetMap, as a collaborative project, is welcoming every new mapper with open hands and tries to help and guide new contributors by offering mapping tools that are well suited also for beginners. This workflow showcases some of these tools, in particular the iD editor, the default map editor on openstreetmap.org. The basics of mapping are shown in a few examples of common mapping situations. Also covered are the ins and outs of the OSM community, resources where to find help, as well as the most important concepts of OpenStreetMap’s data and tagging model.

This workshop is targeted to contributors who are new to the OpenStreetMap and mappers with relatively little experience. The workshop will start covering the steps from creating your first account, getting familiar with the user interface of the map editor and basic map editing. It continues to introduce the most important concepts of OpenStreetMap’s data model and show where to find help and additional information about the map features and attribute tags in OSM. Additionally, it is explained how the OSM community as a whole is working and connected. The workshop concludes with a few pointers to alternative mapping tools such as mobile apps to contribute to OSM, and showcases a few useful additional tools that can help while mapping.
