Our university won a call for proposals from the French ministry of higher education, research and space, to develop program regarding disability and inclusion in higher education and created the “Tous EGO” program. One of the initiatives is the university mapping project, to help students navigate the campus, especially those with disabilities. The decision was made to use OpenStreetMap, to create an interactive map of the university, indoor and outdoor, thanks to Teritorio a french commercial enterprise in the social and solidarity economy providing us technical solutions using OpenStreetMap.
It would be a pleasure for me to present the university mapping project of the UBO - Université de Bretagne Occidentale (Brest, France). Our university won a call for proposals from the French ministry of higher education, research and space, to develop projects regarding disability and inclusion in higher education and created the “Tous EGO” project - which roughly translates to “All Together to Grow and Open” ). The aim is to support students with disabilities in all aspects of their academic experience by changing dynamics inside our university’s governance structure, working on the educational aspect of studies, and improving life on campus.
One of the initiatives is the university mapping project, to help students navigate the campus, especially those with disabilities. The decision was made to use OpenStreetMap, to create an interactive map of the university, indoor and outdoor, thanks to Teritorio , a french commercial enterprise in the social and solidarity economy providing us technical solutions using OpenStreetMap. Using OSM has allowed us to create a community around the contributors helping by participating in mapping events or hearing about the project and students as well as university staff and professors.
Furthermore, we are heavily documenting the project, as for all the “Tous EGO” projects, we follow a demonstrative model, so that other universities or structures can replicate them and get the best possible result.
In this project, we are mainly working on indoor mapping, which is still a growing use of OSM. Which means points of interest are rooms, lecture halls, offices, reception desks and put into categories like faculties, departments or research labs. Of course, we are also focusing on accessibility: is there tactile paving, are toilets accessible, where are the elevators or is this room equipped with a hearing loop system for deaf people? Due to the fact that indoor mapping is in construction, we are encountering issues with tagging, or using tools like JOSM and QGIS that we had to improve by creating .mapcss files, presets or plugins… We are finding solutions, working with the OSM community in France and internationally, and trying to improve ways to map indoors.
