Hospital campuses can be overwhelming—especially in stressful situations where finding the right department quickly really matters. In collaboration with a major French hospital, we built an application powered by OpenStreetMap that brings together mapping, medical directories, accessibility data, event management and multimodal routing to guide users seamlessly to their destination. In this talk, we’ll share the functional, technical, and organizational challenges behind turning complex hospital environments into clear and accessible navigation experiences.
A key challenge was enabling hospital teams to independently manage and update the app on a daily basis. We designed a dedicated back-office tailored to non-technical users, making it easy to maintain data, services, and events. At the same time, we stayed true to our initial ambition: engaging the hospital in a collaborative approach to sharing and opening its data.
